Description
Subject: Structural ground-borne vibrations affecting residential Victorian property from Route 444 electric fleet
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally report an ongoing highways and transit issue causing severe structural vibrations to my Victorian property located at 40 and 42 Boreham Road, N22 6sP.
The source of the issue is the deteriorated road surface directly outside my property. While there may not be a single catastrophic pothole, the general surface decay, rutting, and unevenness are interacting severely with passing transit vehicles. Specifically, these ground-borne vibrations are exclusively triggered by the single-deck electric buses operating on Route 444 (operated by London General / Go-Ahead).
Due to the significantly high axle weight and low-slung battery configurations inherent to these electric bus models (such as the Enviro200EV / GB Kite fleets), hitting the uneven road ripples creates a harsh impact load. Because my property is a Victorian-era build featuring traditional shallow brick footings, these ground-borne Rayleigh waves travel un-attenuated into the foundations and are amplified upwards by our timber floor joists. This results in severe shaking, rattling of fixtures, and structural distress.
Under Section 41 of the Highways Act 1980, the Highway Authority has a statutory duty to maintain the road to a safe standard. Furthermore, TfL has an obligation to ensure its contracted fleets do not cause a nuisance or damage to adjacent infrastructure.
I request that:
1. The Council’s Highways Team inspects this specific stretch of the road for surface irregularities, sunken utility trenches, or rutting, and prioritises it for localized resurfacing.
2. TfL Passenger Services logs this impact data with the Northumberland Park garage operator to review the vehicle speed and suspension maintenance profiles of the fleet deployed on this stretch.
3. I request that Mr Ramjam, Highways Manager looks to consider resurfacing of the remainder of Boreham road (not just a small section) and its a reasonable request that its includes this from April budgeting 2027 pertaining to the impact on properties. small backroads are not affected by these problems and so you shouild be prioritise main arterial roads prone to deteroations and ground borne impacts,
I look forward to your prompt response (please communicate the outcome of this report on the report link so its visible to the residents of Boreham Road and Citizens Advice) and details of your proposed inspection date.
